Hello young people. Welcome to the TV Turnoff Blog. On Monday, I will post your first assignment prompt. For now, all I need you to do is write “hello” so that I know you have figured out how to comment. Remember, I am moderating the sight, so your comment will not post immediately. Also, don’t forget: only fill in the name field above your comment (i.e. JohnD7). Leave the email address and website fields empty. Give it a go. Of course, if you would like to say more than hello, go right ahead. Perhaps you can tell me what you think about this TV Turnoff. Will it be easy to succeed, or difficult? Does it interest you, or is it stupid? Anything.
OK, have a fun and safe prom–and don’t forget to read chapter 2 of Brave New World.

Hello
I’m surprised that people got so upset over this.
It’s not like there’s anything worth watching on TV anyway.
Oh, and hello
The first thing I did when I got home was turn on some Simon and Garfunkel while I cleaned the kitchen for prom dinner. Oops ^.^. At least it was playing on a stereo that’s older than I am and not an iPod. Hmm how am I supposed to do this when we’re watching movies at an After After Prom party I’m going to?
Aaaaaaand hello.
Hello
Hey Mr. D!

Hello too.
Hey! I messed up already. My mom wanted me to text her after prom to make sure i was alright.

Hello!
Did you have an urge that you tried to fight?
I had an urge on Sunday to watch TV because I was so tired and didn’t feel like doing anything else.
What is the urge like?
I was just bored and watching TV can make it less boring.
How and when does it come?
The urge comes everytime I am at my house and have nothing better to do besides watch TV.
How did you fight it?
I fought it by trying to find other things to do.
Did you succeed in resisting it?
Not really, I was at my friends house and everyone was watching a movie so I didn’t really have a choice >.
Hey
Hello
i definately failed miserably this weekend with the turn-off. its weird because this is the first time ive ever really thought about how much time people spend doing these things it’s crazy. it’s almost like just turning on the tv or listening to an ipod is like habit and i do it subconsciously not even thinking about it!
I did fine with it this weekend. We don’t watch tv in my house… and i was busy and away from my computer so i totally succeeded.
Hello
hey d!!! ok so i had about 7 million urges to watch tv and text message… but the urge to go on facebook is the worst!!! it almost makes it harder that it is like “outlawed” because it really makes me want to do it more :/
everytime i walk by my computer i want to go on facebook and everytime im bored i want to watch a movie….. so the urge happens quite often. i seriously bought every magizine at the store so thats keeping my mind off of it….. a little.
i have caved in to the temptation alot. im going to try harder for the rest of the week.
i did pretty good over the weekend except for late on sunday cux i finally woke up, and totally forgot about the turn off… and i can totally do the turn off if i have something to do, it is when i dont it gets a little more difficult, but i am going to try. so we will see how i do during the week
hello
Work def makes this alot easier- the only one I really have a problem with is listening to my ipod when I work out. Tonight I read some magazines instead and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be! Oh and e-mail…I need to check it!
I think boredom happens when the mind has nothing to do. I think that because we have so many things to keep us entertained all the time– our mind becomes bored when it has to keep itself busy. For many people, when we have to think for ourselves (ie in class or alone or during tv turnoff) we become bored and wish to do something like watch tv so that something else can think for us. The technologies have made it possible to do every sort of thinking for us, for example calculators to do our math, the internet to give us essays or spark notes, and even the phone to give us easy access to people who can help us on homework or whatever. I mean I am sure people in the 19th century were bored as well, but their boredom probably manifested from lack of things to do.
This is for assignment one.
So far the only time i have failed is when i was watching the movie with my parents. Although it was kind of difficult, i did leave the TV set the second i remembered. Also i am finding that i have goten into a habit of watching TV for periods of about a half an hour every once in a while and i am just seeing that it has goten into a habit. I am just noticing it more.
heyo
hi
hello.

What Up D-Stef, Im Ready To Blog It Up
Yesterday was aweful. I couldn’t resist and even blogged while I was watching TV. As I think about your Buddist experience, I realize how different Americans live their lives compared to much of the world. I don’t know if it is better or worse. Our culture has completly molded around these technologies and because it is the only way I know of living, my thoughts are so shallow. I makes me sad to think that I don’t know how I would spend my time without TV. I cannot come up with more than five things to do. I think it will only get worse.
im with sean here. i was with him this weekend and we discussed how hard it was. i sat and watched hhim fail numerous times as did he to me. i feel ridiculous its such an easy thing to accomplish on paper but ya not so much. i tried doing other things but mainly just ended up on myspace or on the couch. eating takes up time well but i get full and wanna relax after so that didnt work
